Mallets
The carving mallet is a specialized carving "hammer" used to strike chisels and gouges. Mallets used for wood carving are mostly made of wood or brass. Wooden mallets should be made of quality wood. Hardness of wood should be close to the hardness of the handle of the tool with which you use it. Proper use will extend the life of both tools. The brass mallet enables you to strike the chisel with minimal effort, maximizing efficiency. Its heavy end does not rebound off the tool, resulting in all the force being directed towards the tool. Unlike traditional wooden mallets, using the brass mallet requires only a gentle flick of the wrist, instead of a full-handed blow.
